New York Fashion Week is already halfway over and fashion journalists have been running from show to show. But the catwalk show that intrigued me the most was the debut collection from Jonathan Saunders for Diane von Furstenberg.
Well, it was definitely not a traditional fashion show. No open-air funfair like Tommy Hilfiger X top model Gigi Hadid. But instead a private invitation-only viewing in a showroom. Herewith, Saunders keeps the course DVF set last season when the American designer with Belgian roots turned the ship around as a result of the tsunami in fashion world.
Diane von Furstenberg, who became world famous with the iconic wrap dress, appointed in May this year the Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders as the new chief creative officer of DVF. The Scot, and recently also New Yorker, stayed true to the feminine DNA of von Furstenberg.
The wrap dress which is inseparably linked to the brand, is a keeper in the debut collection of Saunders. Still, he managed to inject his own contemporary interpretation with a surprising combination of colours and prints, rushes and asymmetric cuts. A successful debut.
